I am one of those people who play COD for the campaign, and buy BF for the MP. The truth is, that COD never progressed very far with engine. COD2 was only slightly smoother than COD1, COD3 was engine-wise an odd offshoot, felt like a COD rip-off, COD4 was the game that ultimately set the standard for call of duty games up to this day. The maps, their sizes, how weapons act, it all stayed ultimately the same since then, and even graphics evolved very, very slowly.
Now, at BO4, I am wondering, why is it called Black Ops? It has little to do with the spin-off series.
