Back in the mid-1990s when Sony brought out the PSOne, a sort of definition happened where in an effort to distance themselves, Sony went aggressively towards all games being 3D in nature and eshewing 2D in every way possible in order to distance themselves from the "Old Guard" of Nintendo and Sega (who had made a righteous little empire off of 2D, by the way)... and the same sort of division holds today when it comes to the two company's hand-helds.
Although there are FPS and the like on DS, 3D is not something the hardware has been pushed all that hard to perform. When you pick up a DS, you know that there's going to be crazy gameplay and rich, vibrant creativity but you also know that for the most part it's not going to be anything like the Sony experience...
... and that's why I feel very lucky to own both...
... I'm suprised no one has mentioned the port of "Super Mario 64" as a possible surrogate, but with that exception, looking for a "Ratchet & Clank"-style game on a Nintendo product is not gonna happen. I think the hardware is capable of performing something passably close to "R&C", I'm just saying that their focus is different. That's why there's a great port of "Mortal Kombat" on the DS, tons of "Castlevania" to be had in DS & GBA cart form. Each brand dabbles in the other system's pool (PSP has a great "Street Fighter", DS has a whalin' "MarioKart", etc., etc.), but for the most part you go to one for a given gaming experience not the other.

I just the DS last week to play with some friends , mainly mario kart cuz 5 ppl in the same room yelling is tooooo fun. I've tried castlevania but did not really like it... started chrono trigger last night and I'm lovin it. I'm just lookin for games that won't get boring fast for me - I heard The World Ends With You is pretty cool...
