sony will use a tier system for the PS4 similar to that of XBL and ehre is roughly how we/they break it down:

tier 3 (free tier (for arguements sake they call it "silver") )

- basic internet use, firmware updates, game patches, web browsing, ability to buy DLC and games via online store

- NO MULTIPLAYER

tier 2 (paid stage 1 (they label it as gold) )

- all of tier 3

- online play

tier 3 (paid for premium ( they label it platinum ) )

- all of tier 2

- complimentary dlc or games every one and a while at no additional charge/reduced cost
