Ok, just a while ago I read the news about how AU election affect gaming. That article really inspired me to read this blog.
First of all, for those who don't live in AU, I will tell you that gaming in AU is painful.
Most games, movies and new technologies are always out like couple months after other countries. And guess what the prices are gonna give you heart attack, coz they cost about 70% more than normal prices (USD$59.99 normally, in AU the games cost AUD$99.99-109.99 which is equvalent to USD$88-90 according to recent exchange rate.) If you get your console (XBOX360) in AU, bad luck for you, coz you HAVE to buy games from AU game market, because the region code is locked in PAL, which means you will never be able to play NTSC games on those consoles and you have to let you wallet cry everytime when you want to buy a good game.
But sometimes good games got banned in AU due to it's dumb, broken and unreliable rateing system. The highest rating for games in AU is MA15+, so if there are games that above this rating, the game will not be stock on the shelves at all. Recently, Soldier of Fortune: Payback, just got banned mainly because the game is "too violent" for most of the players (for them I will say). But for you information, there are whole bunch of violent games outside, such as Conan, Gears of War, etc, etc. Then you may ask, why don't they just make a 18+ rating? Who knows, too lazy and corrupted? Maybe.
Now, the internet speed in AU is also a problem. They called themselves "developed country", but I beg to differ. The internet speed above 560K are their so-called broadband..... it's just slow man!! In Japan and Korea, the standards are 2Mb!! And the worse of all, it cost around AUD$100+ per month... and the upload and download capacities are limilted....
I don't really care who got elected this time, it doesn't really affect me as a gamer, frankly I import most of the games from other place, it's just impossible for me to buy games from AU game stores, I think it's imossible for most of the gamers out there, coz it just cost too much.... Most of the gamers are students, we need to pay rents, books, and stationary, we are poor and we don't have that much money to afford all the great games with those prices. Lucky for me, I didn't buy my console in AU, so I don't have to suffer the high price.
