I'm not sure if Splinter-cell is the appropriate game to compare Assassin's Creed to considering AC takes place during the Third Crusade and SC in the present/future. AC also has a theme of freedom and social stealth blending in with a crowd out in the open unrestricted by game-set paths where as SC has its own set paths you must follow as well as sneaking around in the dark. The only connection I could think of is the whole "genetic memory" and "conspiracy leading into present times" secrets that UbiSoft Montreal won't tell us. I love the Splinter Cell games, but I think I am leaning more towards Assassin's Creed. I always liked historical fiction games. The different time, way of life, and themes are a pleasant change I like. Not to mention it doesn't take as much skill to shoot someone than hack someone down and defend yourself with a sword in my opinion. The free running looks awesome and the fact that you need to play the escape rather than the game ending right after you kill who you need to kill or rescue who you need to save or what have you. I also love the setting, being amidst the turmoil of the Third Crusade in Jerualem, it just seems like the perfect game to me as a stealth gamer who loves some of the stories of History. I am definitely looking forward to Assassin's Creed.
