First off, thank you to everyone who took their time to leave a comment with words of support in my last blog. My life's not been too well in the past couple of weeks, and I've been struggling with university. I'm trying my best to pull myself together now and work as hard as I can. Thank you all. :)
The title of this blog is in reference to the bio-documentary, I Knew It Was You.
It features interviews with the few actors and directors who were fortunate enough to work with the highly underrated actor, John Cazale. Out of the three films I have seen of his (him only having acted in five throughout his, unfortunately, short career), I fail to understand why he had never been nominated for an Oscar at least once. He deserved a nomination for his performances in The Godfather Part II and Dog Day Afternoon. One of my favourite moments from the latter film - where Sonny (Pacino) approaches Sal (Cazale) and asks him what country he would like to go to, and Sal replies "Wyoming" - was revealed to be completely improvised. How the **** was he not nominated?!
I watched two more films in the past few days. I watched Jerry Maguire and Barton Fink. Odd how both are named after their main characters. :P
Jerry Maguire was a fun film to watch. I watched because I wanted to see at least one of Cameron Crowe's works prior to Almost Famous, which I recently borrowed out from the university library. I love the film, and I love Tom Cruise's performance in it. I just don't understand one thing though; how did Cuba Gooding Jr. not only get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, but ACTUALLY(!!!) win? There was nothing - I repeat, NOTHING! - special or unique about his performance. Yet the Academy saw him fit to take home a friggin' Oscar? Unbelievable... :| If Gooding Jr. gets an Oscar, Cruise damn well should have won one too.
Barton Fink was a strange film. It's the only surreal film I have seen of the Coen brothers to date (I have only seen three of their works). I might as well admit that I love John Goodman in both Barton Fink and The Big Lebowski, especially the latter. My favourite character from the film was easily Jack Lipnick (Michael Lerner), though. The film was a tad reminiscent of The Shining, in that it has a writer (this one being for film) slowly losing his mind in a hotel. Fortunately, there is no blonde kid screeching "REDRUM" repeatedly, to the point where I actually contemplate mur-dahhh! At one point, I was expecting John Goodman's character to be a mere figment of Fink's imagination, but it turned out he was not. O, the things Fight Club does to me. I did not quite understand a couple of the events near the end of the film, and I've decided to cheat as I have already deleted the film. I must say that that hotel, especially Fink's room, reminded me of room 1408 from the Stephen King short story, 1408. Overall, it was an amazing little film by the Coen brothers.
I guess that's it for now. I'll probably watch another movie if I have time to do so before my exams. My exams start on Tuesday and end the following Tuesday. Can't wait to plug my PS3 back in! :D
Other than that, I'm out!
