The correct term is distribution, and mplayer-ps3 should be able to play next to everything standard. However, if you dont already know the answer to these questions, then Linux isnt the OS for you.
I used to give friends a PS2 game for xmas as there were plenty of HQ games for cheap, but with the PS3 being so new itll take time for the plat series and such to arrive so this year Im giving DLC. Visa has these prepaid cards which you can fill with however much you want, and best of all they work with PSN so all you have to do is slap 20$ in one and give it to whoever and then they can buy whatever they want. Try it out, its cheap, and gives the gift which keeps on giving. Think of the stuff they can get, Maybe a new pack for Motorstorm or Resistance, SuperStarDust HD, Calling All Cars, or even stock up for when Singstars out and buy some new tunes. Its all good.
