The Mysterious Hero
By Tiffany Gray
Tiffany and Madison were the best of friends. They had been friends for over nine years. Tiffany was eleven years old when she met Madison. Madison was fourteen. All through Tiffany's middle school and high school career, Madison has always been the one friend she turned to for support. Tiffany had a rough life, especially as a teenager. She had a visual disability, and on top of that, so many people bullied and harassed her. Madison was one of the few people that understood her.
Now, Tiffany was nearly twenty-one, and Madison had just turned twenty-four. The two were planning a getaway for a few days. They were planning to camp out on a beach. They packed some food, clothes, and some personal belongings such as music, their iPods and CD players, some batteries, and some other entertainment. Finally, they packed a huge tent and some pillows and blankets to sleep in. Soon, they were ready to leave.
The drive down to the beach they were staying at was not too far away. It was only a few miles down the road. They arrived in about twenty minutes. As soon as they arrived, they set up their tent.
After setting up tent, they changed into their bathing suits and sat near the ocean.
"Ahh, isn't it beautiful?" asked Madison.
"Yeah," Tiffany replied. I like the ocean.
"I bet I can beat you at a splashing contest."
"Oh, really? Bring it on, sister."
"Okay."
Madison and Tiffany got up and ran into the ocean.
"Last one in's a rotten fish egg!" Madison teased.
"I think that's you!" Tiffany teased back.
"Crap!"
"You're goin' down!" Tiffany used all the muscles in her arms to give Madison a big splash.
Madison squeaked when the water hit her. "Oh, you're good."
"I know."
"But, are you this good?!" Madison used the muscles in her arms to give Tiffany an even bigger splash. "Ha! I got you! I totally got you! Now, let's see you top that!"
"Okay." Tiffany managed an even bigger splash!
"Okay! You win! I forfeit."
The girls laughed and randomly splashed each other, back and forth. They had a great time together, bonding and laughing. This was a vacation they looked forward to, and so far, they were very much enjoying it.
That night, the girls laid out their pillows and blankets next to one-another. They crawled under and fell asleep. Well, Madison slept in the tent. Tiffany, on the other hand, walked in her sleep. She didn't realise where she was going. She was heading towards the ocean.
Madison woke up a minute later and noticed that Tiffany wasn't there. "Tiffany? Where are you?" Then, she looked outside the tent and saw Tiffany walking further and further into the ocean. She became worried. "Oh, crap." Luckily, she saw a woman passing by. "I need help!" she screamed, running towards her.
"What's the matter, Sweetie? Is everything okay?!" asked the woman.
Madison pointed over at Tiffany. "That's my best friend! She's sleepwalking, and I need someone to go get her before she drowns!"
"Okay, I'll help you two! I promise." The woman ran into the ocean and could see Tiffany, still walking away. Unfortunately, there was a huge wave headed her way. The woman swam to Tiffany as quickly as she possibly could, just as the wave hit. She found Tiffany, struggling to get back up, and she pulled her all the way back to the shore.
Tiffany suddenly woke up, crying and out of breath.
The woman comforted her. "Shh. It's okay, Sweetie. Your safe now. It's going to be alright, Baby." She led Tiffany back to the tent and helped her dry off. Then, she tucked her under her blanket and sang her to sleep.
Tiffany closed her eyes and listened to the woman's beautiful voice and her powerful lyrics. She cried as the lullaby touched her heart. It was almost as if an angel had rescued her, and now, the angel was singing to her.
The kind woman dried Tiffany tears as she finished her lullaby. When she finished, she kissed her forehead. "Good night, Sweetheart." Then, she disappeared into the night, leaving Tiffany to sleep peacefully.
The next morning, Tiffany woke up, wrapped in her blanket. She looked around for the person who had saved her life the night before, but she saw no signs of her. She saw Madison right outside the tent. "Madi?"
"Good morning, Tiff," Madison greeted cheerfully.
"Hey."
Madison noticed Tiffany looking around as if she was searching for something. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"You're still shook up from last night, aren't you?"
"No. I was just thinking about that person who saved my life. She was so nice to me."
"Yeah. She was a sweetheart."
"I didn't even catch her name or see what she looked like. I wonder what kind of a friendship we'd have."
"Well, I don't know her all that well, but I know she would be a great friend to have around. You know, I saw a little of me in her."
"I did, too. She was like the British version of you."
Madison chuckled. "Yeah. She and I were even wearing the same kind of bathing suit."
"She wears a zip-up bathing suit, too?"
"Yes, and she's also tall and slim like me."
"Wow. I wonder if you're twins."
"We might be."
"Or, you could be soul sisters."
"Probably."
Tiffany sighed. "Madi, will you help me? Please? Will you help me find this person? She was so nice, and I would really like to try and be her friend. She and I might get along good."
"I think you two would be good friends. You'd get along great. I mean, you and I get along."
"You're right."
"Tiffany, Honey, I'll do my best to help you find her. I promise."
"Thanks, Madi. You know, my twenty-first birthday's almost here. I might be getting a lot of presents, but I would trade all those gifts in for a friendship with her. It's the least I can do after she saved my life."
"Aww, this really means a lot to you, doesn't it?"
"Yeah, a lot."
"Then, I'll make sure we find her for you, and we won't leave this beach until we do."
Later on, the girls decided to go for a walk beside the ocean.
"I was scared to death when I saw you sleepwalking, Hun," said Madison.
"Sorry. I didn't realise I was doing it."
"No, don't be sorry. You were asleep. We're not always aware of things we do when we're sleeping."
"I was having a weird dream, though. I think it was similar to what I was actually doing."
"Well, I'm just glad you were saved."
"Me, too."
During the walk, Tiffany looked around for her hero, but she saw no sign of her anywhere. She really wanted to find this person. It meant a lot to her, and Madison understood that. Madison never tried to force Tiffany to give up on her mission.
When it came time for the girls to go to bed, Tiffany decided to stay up later.
"Tiff, do you wanna stay up for a little while?" asked Madison.
"Yeah. I'm just gonna sit here on the beach," Tiffany replied.
"Okay, Honey. Well, I'll be sleeping in the tent if you need me."
"Okay."
"Good night." Madison crawled into the tent and fell asleep.
Tiffany sat near the ocean for hours. She was growing very tired, but she didn't want to give up. She was determined to meet her hero. Well, it was very early in the morning when she almost fell asleep. She still hadn't found her hero, and she desperately needed some sleep. Tears fell from her eyes as she did her business and went to bed. She cried herself to sleep.
Madison woke up, early in the morning, and she saw Tiffany, still crying in her sleep. She wrapped her arms around her and comforted her. "Shh. It's okay, Honey," she whispered. "It's okay."
Tiffany woke up a few hours later. "She didn't show up."
"Aww, is that why you stayed up so late? You were hoping you would run into your hero?"
"Yes. I sat in the same spot all night, and she never showed up. Maybe I should just give up."
"No, Honey, don't!"
"What's the point anyway? I'm never gonna find this person. She's probably gone now."
"No, don't say that. Look, Honey, I won't let you give up on this, because I know how much it means to you. If it'll help any, I know exactly what she looks like, so I'll know it's her when I see her."
"What does she look like?"
"She's tall. She's slim. She has curly hair down to her shoulders. She's a redhead. She's got a lovely face, and I will know it's her by the bathing suit she wears."
"She sounds pretty. I'll probably look at her and wish I was that pretty."
"Oh, every girl would do that. She's very pretty."
"Do you think she's a boy magnet?"
"Probably."
"I know I'm being all random."
"No, it's okay."
"I'm really random."
"So am I."
