My thoughts on Oblivion, Morrowind, and PC/360 comparison

I know that there are some fans of The Elder Scrolls series who were let down by this game, (specifically the die-hard fans of Morrowind). Let me tell you a short story. It is a true story and I want to tell it because it is a good example of why Oblivion is such a great game.

A friend of mine recently got the 360 for Christmas. He is not an avid gamer so he came to me for advice and asked me what I thought was a good game. I recommended Oblivion because it is one of my favorites. He asked me what the game was about. I told him it was an RPG and described the game for him. He said it sounded cool, but that he wanted something more like an action game.

“I want something that’s going to give me instant gratification.” These were his exact words.

I’m not one to argue so I recommended Gears of War. He went to the store and got both. Needless to say, this guy loved GOW, but he was surprised to find that he could not stop playing Oblivion.

My reason for telling this story is because it shows the broad appeal that Oblivion has on gamers. I loved Morrowind. It was one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played, but then I love RPGs. For all its immersions and beauty, Morrowind is not for the average gamer. It is a difficult game to get into if you don’t have hours of spare time to play. Oblivion manages to capture many of the best that Morrowind has to offer, and improves on many of the negative aspects of Morrowind.  My only gripe with the game is the leveled loot and NPCs. This is easily remedied with a mod (if you have the PC version of course). That brings me to my final thought on this amazing game.

Heed my advice for it comes from a true gamer not a fanboy of any console. If you have a top end PC that can run Oblivion at near max specs, get it on PC. As good as the 360 version is, and it is good .The PC version is better because you have access hundreds of mods made by many talented and creative gamers out there. Some of these mods like Oscuro’s Oblivion Overhaul are simply amazing. If you don’t have a good PC then your best bet is to get it on 360. You will still have the official mods made by Beth Soft to keep you playing for a long long time. Who knows maybe some day Microsoft will allow gamers to download player-mods from Xbox live. I wouldn’t hold my breath though LOL.
