new vegas was the truest representation of classic fallout in 3D... partly because the studio had devs from the original fallout series... they stayed true to stats, skill points and perks, which allowed for diverse characters and managed to develop a great game within a very short time period(despite the recycling of textures and models) which can be argued is potentially still be better than fallout 4...especially with mods.

there was an option for that in the game later on, if that indeed is your problem its fixed now.
