Digital Life in New York Impressions - PS3

Ok first quick update. I just came back from Digital Life in New York. I got to play many many games across xbox 360, ps3, ps2, psp and wii. Since this is a ps3 board, I'll dedicate this post to discussing the ps3 games. First off, Sony had a pretty small booth with only 2 playable ps3 games on 2 seperate Sony bravia 40 inch flat screens: Resistance: Fall of Man, and NBA07. Both had extremely sharp textures running in full 1080p. The nba game has two seperate viewpoints: a tv-like viewpoint from the commentator box, and a third person viewpoint which is much closer to the court and turns when the ball changes hands after each point. Barring some foot sliding, the animations in the game were really awesome to look at. AI still needs work, but this is definitely a good start. I saw just about everyone playing it get owned by the computer team AI. As another attendee pointed out, the AI dunks too much. The Resistance: Fall of Man demo was an incomplete version of the game featuring only 4 levels that were playable in single player only. Still, the textures, lighting, and effects were top notch, and not once did i ever see the frame rate drop even after standing around, watching others play, and playing the game myself; with many allies and chimera on screen at the same time. All the cinematics on the game are done using the in game engine. Finally, the draw distance is INSANE. Not once did I ever see any pop-up. Gameplay-wise, the game looks to at least match the best fps's in the genre. Stylistically, the game also has some influences from HL2 and Call of Duty, which is a good thing. On a final note, the weapons are incredibly fun, especially the hedghog, auger, and the sniper rifle (I forget now what it's called exactly). Thats really something that makes the game stand on its own merits. I seriously can't wait to play this online!

My Thoughts on TGS

Well first off, the Gamespot coverage was horrible....so horrible that I couldn't believe that I just had $1.99 just stolen from me. Not that I care about money, but its the principal of getting what you pay for. And it was so bad that I wouldn't pay 1 cent for this coverage, and I won't ever again. The silver lining was that I got to chat with some cool Gamespot members...they really need to have an IRC chatroom, or something like that for gamespot people, for free. Its not too difficult to do that. Anyway, on to the actual Show. Sony's keynote was extremely boring, but what do you expect with the coverage that we got? In any case, lots of people's expectations were too high, and of course everyone was dissapointed at the lack of concrete information on the launch of the PS3. At least this won't be the last conference before Nov. 17th. The games on the other hand, Afrika, Ninja Gaiden, White Knight Story, Ridge Racer, Resistance: Fall of Man, and too many others to name really represented what in my mind I thought would be constitute the next generation. In particular, I was most impressed by Afrika, as its a game that seems to be in an entirely new genre in gaming. The visuals were phenomenal, almost photo-realistic. In any case, I really look forward to the october conference to see what Sony will come up with, and to finally see all the cards that Sony is still keeping to themselves.

A little more about my life...

Well, I took my degrees in music performance and business and really started teaching seriously. I teach piano, and I have over 40 private students. I'm also working on alot of solo rep lately, and also playing some chamber music including 2 piano stuff and cello sonatas. Alot of my recent time goes to teaching and practicing, but when I have a chance I like to play any ps1-2, psp, snes or genesis games. I also like to browse these forums, and contribute anything that I find worthwhile. Video games have alot of creatitivity in the way that the other arts do, including music. Still, music is one of my biggest passions, and I've done alot of performing, accompanying, recording, designing (mostly everything from fliers, cd cover art, ect.) and arranging too. Anyways, I like to keep busy ;)
