do you have any suggestions for the laptop? (anything better - more bang for my buck - than a vostro 1400?)

Should I but a nice gaming desktop for ~1200 and a ~600 dell laptop or should I just buy a ~1200 laptop that can play games relatively well ( but not as good as the ~1200 one).
