No, its not imperative at all. I'd recommend you played them, but to summerise them for you: Everyone Dies!! There is no characters from the previous games that survived (at least that I have met yet, I've not quite finished running through 3).

If this trailer is anything to go by, the loooong wait will be well worth it!!

Will there be any characters from the original 2 games surviving into the 3rd one? Will there be any Max skins, so you can play as the "crazy-eyed-I-love-shooting-people" Max off of the first game? Will this be a linear experience or will there be alternate playthroughs? Does the graphic novel feel of the original games return? Will we be playing through more of Max's nightmares?... ...for everything else I will "patiently" await launch day.

Gahh, Tuesday? I have to wait till Friday :-(
