Ports on Wii

One of the thing I have heard a lot of people complaining about is ports/wiimakes on wii. I think they are a great thing.

A lot of the games that are being ported to wii are good games: Okami, RE4, Godfather, Various New Play Control Titles, Twilight Princess, etc. A lot of people complain because they already have played these games. I, however have not. Although I am not a new gamer, there are still tons of great games that I've missed out on. I am glad to have versions of some of these games on a console I own. If you've already played the game, then you have no need to get it again. If these games are new to you, then get them if you find them fun and interesting.

A lot of people who buy wii are relatively new gamers. It is safe to assume that these gamers have not played the ps2/gamecube games that are being ported. Its great to expose these games to a wider audience that is found on the wii.

I'm all for new play control. I haven't played most of these games since I never owned a cube, and it is difficult to find used copies of a lot of these games in stores. I'm looking forward to getting pikmin and Metroid Prime 1 and 2.

The wii also has a lot of inferior versions of games that are out on 360/ps3. So what? I only own a wii. I can't afford a 360 or ps3 at the moment. If I had a 360 or ps3, I would probably rather play most of these games on that. However, I only own a wii. A lot of these games look like fun, even if the graphics suffer a big hit. As long as most of the content/gameplay is there, then so what? I'd rather have a game that is fun, even if it is inferior to other versions, than no game at all.

Zelda

The Legend of Zelda is becoming my favorite video game franchise.

The first time I played Zelda was when I played "A Link to the Past" on the SNES. I was probably in early elementary school, and I was visiting relatives in Minnesota. Unfortunately, I only got the first temple in the dark world before our trip was over. At the time, I had no game consoles, except for the original gameboy. I had played a lot of SNES games before, but most of them were platformers. I really enjoyed Super Mario World, but I was really bad at it. I was not good at timing jumps, which made playing Super Mario World, or any platformer, a fun yet futile experience. Zelda, however was less about timing jumps than about exploration and solving puzzles. When playing A Link to the Past as a child, I felt a sense of awe just exploring hyrule, talking to people, and attacking various baddies with my sword.

When I got my first console, I was in fifth grade. I wanted to get either a Playstation or a Nintendo 64. I had more experience with the Nintendo 64, since most of my friends had it, but I ended up getting a Playstation, since at the time I did not have a CD player, and I could use the Playstation as one. Unfortunately, I missed out on a lot of good games. However, I still had tons of fun, mostly playing Tony Hawk 1 and 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Twisted Metal 2, Crash Bandicoot 1-3, and Tomb Raider 1-3.

One of my friends in junior high had a NES. He had the original zelda game, as well as the side scrolling sequel. I enjoyed playing these games, but regrettably did not get the full experience. The only time I played these games was in short bursts, playing on my friend's file. He had already beaten both of them, so he ended up telling me where to go whenever I got lost, so I did not get the same sense of wonder that I got from exploring on my own in Link to the Past.

In high school, I missed out on Wind Waker. I got a Ps2 and an Xbox. I pretty much had no experience with gamecube since none of my friends ended up getting it.

I got my first job when I was a junior in high school. One of the first things I did when I got paid for the first time was buy a Gameboy Advance SP, along with the port of the original Zelda. I stayed up late at night in my room playing this game, and eventually beat it. I wanted another fun experience with the Zelda franchise, so I ended up buying a used copy of the Oracle of Seasons, which I also loved.

A little while ago, I bought a wii, I hadn't been seriously into gaming, and none of the games on 360 or Ps3 appealed to me enough to make me want to buy the system. I bought a wii, because a lot of the games sounded appealing, and because my girlfriend wanted to buy wii fit. One of the first things that I did after I bought a wii was to download the ocarina of time. I again became addicted. The dungeons were puzzling, and the bosses were satisfying without being too difficult. I also had a good time exploring hyrule field, searching for Poes. I beat the game not to long after I had bought it, and I sought another satisfying zelda experience.

This past Christmas I received Twilight Princess for Wii. I did not stat playing it right away because at the time I was caught up in playing Super Mario Galaxy. I have finally started playing it and it is currently my favorite game. There are so many things about this game that have made me fall in love with it. It does a good job of capturing the feel of Ocarina of Time, yet it is different enough to still feel fresh. It is very impressive visually as well. I feel that the story in this game has a lot more depth than in past Zelda games as well. The characters you encounter on your adventure have a lot of personality to them. Also, one of the coolest things ever is being able to use your sword while riding epona.

After beating this game, I plan on going back and playing Wind Waker. Based on what I've seen, it looks like a charming game that adds a lot to the Zelda legacy. I also finally have A Link to the Past. I hope to finally complete the game that made fall in love with the Zelda franchise to begin with.
