I agree it's all about the economics and the the money flow. People agree with the familiar and are in a sense afraid to risk their dollar in unknown territory. However I feel that is the same feeling that started games to begin with, people didn't know what to expect from certain games, and the experiments that came out brilliantly became the franchises that are known today. The problem nowadays is that we just experiment with new hardware, yet leave the software the same way (at least for most series) it was a decade ago, with only a few tweaks and characters. Maybe we need a better way to distribute demos of new games so they reach the masses and inform them that there are indeed deeper and more lengthy games worth trying!I can't say I agree with the topic. Nintendo is stronger than ever with their never changing characters and tweaked storylines for their main franchises. I do think you make some good points about the rather static characters, but honestly, it is the gameplay that pushes the games. Alot of people who play these games obviously don't care about characters who don't talk, or else they wouldn't sell in record breaking numbers.
I'm with you in the sense that I don't want to see an indepth storyline about Mario and the Princess, but a new franchise with characters to relate to and empathize with would be nice. I'm pretty sure Nintendo could do whatever it wants at this point and it would continue to have the insane following it does.
It would be nice to see something completely new since we are very aware that Nintendo is capable of making some incredible games, but I believe that most consumers like the familiar and hence why when Mario is slapped on a Tennis or Bowling or Lawn Darts game, everyone buys it...even if the same game came out with different characters and no one would give it a second glance.

If you're ignorant and naive, yes.mdisenThen elaborate on how I'm being so naive here. If you fully read the article and not just the title you'd know I'd be talking about depth in characters and imaginative story lines. If there's a wii game that you think has depth, defend that game, I'd love to hear about it and gladly follow up on a REAL argument
