Let me start here, this may piss you off. In-factI intend to do so... in the most friendly way possible. :D
I've been meaning to write this for the past couple of months, and after watching the E3 coverage from a number of different websites, and tv programs I felt that I blog about the potential, and future of gaming would be as noteworthy as ever at this point in time.
I am 22 years old, and have been playing video games since I was wee little babe. Needless to say video games are much more to me than a way to pass the time or for shear entertainment purposes. Some talk politics, some religion, I on the other-hand, talk games. Games them selves have come a long way since I have first started playing, I lived through the golden ages of Nintendo, saw the rise and fall of Sega (and Sonic in tow), and I've seen the leaps and bounds in technilogical advancements that bring us to where we are today. Yet, that begs the question, where exactly are we?
At E3 this year I watched as the big three, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, took a steaming dump, and everyone applauded. Don't get me wrong, there was some good in there, but honestly not much. With games that have pushed the envelope closing their chapters on their main games (God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Halo, etc) I greave for the software that will come next.
Hardware wise this E3 was all about Microsoft and PS3 making their own motion controlled pariphrieal, I for one don't really give a **** Sony your "Move" looks absolutely **** RIDICULOUS. I'm sorry, I'm not shelling out $100+ for TWO controllers, one with a baseball sized lightbulb on the top (WTF), and an eye toy. Thanks but no thanks Ive got a Wii-Mote, and I have a flash light, so I think the market is tapped there.
Moving on to the company that created this monster, Nintendo. What a better way to show off the Wii-Motion Plus' added control than with hands on preview of the new Zelda: Skyward Sword by non-other by the LEGENDARY creator of the series Mr. Miyamoto, right? NO. Watching this segment was like nails down a chalk board. The segment showed Links new controls that allow you to freely swing the sword with "precision" 1:1 movements. And then you watch Miyamoto get his ass handed to him by a Deku Sprout as the controls fail and Link apparently has a stroke on screen and Miyamoto tries deperately not to fail by flaing the Wii Mote ALL OVER THE PLACE. This was worse than watching the Wii Music Demo from last year (If you havent seen it please do , it's horribly hilarious). After watching this epic fail live, I needed to find another heart piece, because mine was now broken. (Cut for a moment while a quest for one).
BACK! Anyway.Microsoft! The new kid on the block. The underdog. The mutibillion dollar conglomirate. What ever you choose to call them, the 'Soft is pulling up from behind. Their display of the new motion sensing Kinectic (previously Project: Natal) was by far the best, besides the dude who looked like he just stepped straight out of Vice City to promote this thing. With a hand full of demos ranging from adventure, exercise to straight up club rat dance offs, it truely was the least boring and pathetic to watch. The "Adventure" game looks like some thing straight our of Nick Arcade. Now that might sound like an insult but how many of you YEARNED to be on that show and play those games? Case closed. The moves were precise, in time, and most of all not bound by perifreal, which I don't know about you guys but if Im gonna get up and move around for a game, I dont want to held down to using a controller for 85% of the options. Also the button pressing on screen? Minority Report anyone? To top things off Harmonix, the daddy of Guitar Hero and RockBand and many ambigous other musicly involved games got on stage to anounce its support for the 360's new baby. Harmonix let loose a demo of thier new Dance Central, which looked simple yet extremelely interactive and fun.
Ill continue more soon right now COD is calling.
