Mass Effect Massively Underrated ala Gamespot

Is it me, or did Gamespot massively underrate Mass Effect? Probably the flagship RPG title of the year, the 8.5 rating was significantly under the 9.3 average by other critics. Even IGN, one of Gamespot's main competitors gave it a 9.4. I understand critics need to be objective and not go with the flow, but this gap is questionable. And why the low score, vehicle glitches? Is that even the main aspect of the game? Last time I checked, storyline is what made or broke an RPG, which Mass Effect more than adequately delivers.

This brings into question whether the new rating system Gamespot has put into place this year has worked adequately. We've seen in the meantime six other games within the last month get editor's choice awards by Gamespot. Did the staff freak out and go "oh my gosh we need to cut down on giving these out, or endanger devaluing this distinction!" I hope Gamespot is open-minded enough to take a little criticism by letting me post this, instead of waving the libel flag. What do you guys think of the game's rating and the overall new rating system? Does it do justice?
