Peter Christopherson 1955 - 2010

Just read the news late yesterday afternoon that Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson passed away in his sleep at his home in Bangkok, Thailand. One of the most influential musicians of the past 30 years, his first group, Throbbing Gristle, pretty much created the industrial music genre. They coined the term "industrial music" at any rate. Following the disillusion of TG he went on to form Psychic TV with TG frontman Genesis P-Orridge. Leaving PTV soon afterward he formed the incredibly influential band Coil with his partner Jhonn Balance. Coil lasted until Jhonn's passing in November 2004. Afterwhich Peter relocated from England to Bangkok and began work on his own solo music which he released under the name the Threshold HouseBoys Choir. He also released two CDs with Russian-Swedish musician Ivan Pavlov (COH) under the name Soisong. At the time of his death he was working on music with Trent Reznor for Trent's new group How To Destroy Angels (itself named after Coil's first single).
Words cannot possibly express how much Peter and his work have influenced me, both musically and personally, over the past 14 or 15 years since I became aware of Coil. I consider him to be something of a mentor. I had the honor of meeting Peter personally in Chicago last year at the second Throbbing Gristle event there. Though our meeting was brief, no longer than a minute or two, the warmth and kindness he projected was apparent. Even as I type this I am struggling to come up with words to match my feelings right now, so I'll simply leave it at this: Goodbye Peter. May you radiate as brightly in the next life as you did in this, your spirit will certainly continue to shine here for many years to come. And should we meet again in the next I'll buy you that beer.
Peter Martin Christopherson - "Unkle Sleazy"
February 27, 1955 - November 24, 2010
"we are all only temporary curators of our present bodies, which will all decay, sooner or later. In a hundred years or so ALL the humans currently alive will have died. I take great comfort in knowing, with certainty, that thing that makes us special, able to enrich our own lives and those of others, will not cease when our bodies do, but will be just starting a new (and hopefully even better) adventure..." - Peter Christopherson
