Great promo showing how awesome the sound and look of the game will be. However, gameplay is why we play a game and its very difficult from these promos to tell if it will be fun or not. If done right isolationist games can be very engaging, but we'll wait to see what happens when it comes out.
Per usually - great segment. My shelves are full of green boxes (Xbox 360) rather than PS3 boxes. So I had a similar experience game wise as you. However, since my wife has learned about PS3's Netflix, Hulu and YouTube channels, we turn on the PS3 more than the Xbox 360, which I didn't expect to happen. I haven't bought a new system yet but I was definitely leaning towards PS4 but I'll wait till your review of Xbox One first.
PS. I've always liked Xbox controllers better than PlayStation's, but in the end its all about the games to me. Console wars be damned.
I'd like to see more than just 2 choices. An obvious third choice is Nintendo, but Nintendo needs to pick up its game, release a current gen console (on par with Xbox&PS4) and allow more outside developers' games and ideas. Competition breeds excellence; and better games, which is really what we want. Regardless of the console.
I can be all these types, depending on the mood, game, or setting aka friends around. I like these articles but you should list them (The Gamer Type) somewhere on the website, webpage where we can see them. Come on, GameSpot! Get with the program; user compatibility, ease of use, easily re-searchable webpage, how about a quick vote or tally. Oh, and burying Jess's name in the tag with out an accompanying picture doesn't do her credit on an interesting article.
Nice job, always interesting. Please keep it around. A few suggestions. I know budget constraints are impeding these suggestions but anyway.
1. Try interviewing more than one scientist.
2. Try seeing if there are more than one theoretical way of doing something. aka another scientist, university.
3. Try using some graphical elements beyond just showing video game footage, integrate the two.
4. Don't be afraid to compare theories from multiple games. I know you've sort of done this in the past but for example Halo, Star Wars and other sci-fi games have myriads of hovering vehicles.
Gears of War is the epitome of easy gaming. Every Gears I bought after the first one I would immediately up the difficulty to the highest it would allow and then play the game. The last time I played a FPS on the highest level of difficulty and thought it was still fun, not cheap, challenging and engaging was Halo 1.
And quicktime events!? Yes, there are more and more of those, but it depends on how they are used, I don't like the ones that have a big button on the screen like in God of War or Ninja Gaiden that say, push X now, push B now. Stupid. But in Deus Ex, I was surprised how much I enjoyed doing the stealth takedowns in the game. Yes, these were quicktime events technically, but they were implemented in the game in such a way as to make it fun, by not having pop up reticules, push A now, and having a variety of take downs so you were never quite sure which one you would see.
There are ways to make games challenging, but not cheap. For one, get rid of regenerating health. If your low on ammo that's fine, but you should be able to steal ammo from dead enemies, and they shouldn't have unlimited ammo either. I've actually never seen a game where the enemy does not have unlimited ammo, ever.
Have you noticed over the last decade that it isn't whether "the game" will be released on Xbox or Playstation, because it will, but rather will Nintendo, ever get the game? The answer there is no.
Nintendo was my childhood console, it was state of the art back then, if you wanted a great game it was there on Nintendo, but now Nintendo has sold itself to Toys'R'US and has become the game console of children. I grew up, but the console did not. And when Xbox and Playstation come out with their next generation console Nintendo will be just that much farther behind.
This Wii U just seems like another tacked on gimmick controller to a already weak console. I'm not buying.
