Why wouldn't they? The industry treats them as full games, they have enough new content and game mechanics to warrant a fresh experience (well, good ones do) and there are even many standalone titles these days (Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, Dawn of War Dark Crusade, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, Galactic Civ 2's Dark Avatar).

I have my own views on expansion packs which I've talked about many times on this board.....but this is not the place for that discussion.

Actually Dan's right. Unlike before, the trend nowadays is that expansion packs work as stand-alone games, and as with COH: Opposing Fronts, at times offer even more content than the original.

Expansion packs are a strength of the PC.

I just love how Relic makes DOW an even bigger chaotic bloodbath with every expansion! I think GS should screw themselves for giving CnC3 a higher score than DOW.
