If you were going to say the Fan Test for the 40GB - I heard that is not recommend and can actually break your PS3.

Clean out the inside using a light powered vaccuum cleaner or dust-vac. Don't use compressed air because it blows the dust INTO the PS3. Use a swiffer duster to clean the top of the PS3, it works really well.

i upgraded my from 40gig to 500gig sata HDD :D

SATA HDD(specific labtop HDD, u might want to go to a store and ask for help)

beware that you will lose all your game saves after formating.
