Apparently no one read the article. Just like co-op it's purely optional, and you can apparently use these in-game scavenger bots to collect currency instead of using microtransactions.

I agree it's a poor idea, and no one's going to use it, (I know I won't) but you guys need to read the fine print before making a conclusion.
