is the product key part of Windows 7 Upgrade or the full retail version? if it's an Upgrade, the key will only work if the computer had Windows XP or Vista preinstalled. Upgrade keys will not work if you reformatted the computer then installed the OS.

aside from wasting electricity and running up your bill, there are no dangerous effects. parts may wear out but that's to be expected and adds a neglible difference.

i have used both wireless routers and I am currently using the Buffalo model. both are very good and highly recommended.

1920x1080, graphical settings would be dependent on whether or not the GPU can handle the resolution at playable framerates.

contact Logitech to get a replacement for your mouse, if still under warranty. doesn't sound like the mouse was working correctly if it freezes and shuts off. i use Logitech products and never had that type of problem.

are you looking for wired or wireless?

if used for gaming, i would recommend the Logitech MX518, Logitech G500 or Razer DeathAdder. these are all wired mice and great for gaming/regular use.

if you want wireless, Logitech VX Revolution or Logitech MX

these should all be within your budget, if not a bit more expensive. but all are highly recommended and should satisfy your requirements.

$400 seems to be a fair price judging by age, hardware and condition.

if you don't plan on using it, i would suggest selling it. it's value will only continue to decrease over time. as for value, i can't really say definitively how much it's worth, but to ballpark it, i would say $500-$600 USD if you include everything, maybe more, maybe less. it's a very good computer but good resale value is no match against new hardware that constantly comes out, along with the fact that most PC buyers tend to go with big companies like HP or Dell.

try selling it as a whole before parting it out. and try selling it to a younger crowd, who might understand technology more and therefore appreciate it's hardware and price. good luck!

go to www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net and run both tests with your connection going through the router. then, disconnect the WAN ethernet cable from the router and plug it straight to your computer and retest. both test results won't be the same, but it should be similar. it should also show that you are getting close to the speeds you are paying for with an A or B result for ping testing. if your connection through the router shows bad scores, you may have to update the firmware and do a hard reset. go to D-Link's website and look for an updated version of your firmware. after installing, do a hard reset by holding the reset button down for 20-30 seconds. then, immediately disconnect the power after releasing the reset button. wait a few minutes and reconnect the power. don't forget to change the settings to your liking. run your tests again to see if it results in better speeds.

if not, you may have to purchase a new router as your old one may be failing.

if the connection straight from the modem to your computer isn't good, it might be your internet service provider then.
