"Destiny 2" is about to be revealed and there is no doubt that as of right now this game is not headed to the Nintendo Switch. This is of little surprise but of considerable concern. The Switch, though would like to replicate the Wii's success in terms of sales, should not hope to replicate it in terms of third party support. But why isn't the Nintendo Switch getting a version of "Destiny 2"?
First, Nintendo's online functions are years behind industry standards. This is a sad state of affairs for Nintendo and is certainly hurting the core gamer experience on Nintendo Switch. How is Bungie suppose to implement such an online intensive experience on the Switch when Nintendo doesn't even have a reliable and robust network for them to work with?
Secondly, Nintendo consoles have long not been a bastion for games like Destiny. Nintendo's approach to hardware design has alienated third party supporters and the core gaming audience for well over a decade now. It's a true shame too, because Nintendo consoles were once THE place for content, but have become increasingly insular over the years.
Thirdly, Nintendo may just not care about getting content like Destiny 2 on Nintendo Switch. They're selling systems through the roof and releasing high quality content of their own and might be tasting the left-overs of the sweet financial days of the Wii. The Wii, which also lacked great third party support, was hugely profitable for Nintendo. In my opinion, it was the worst thing that ever happen to Nintendo. They pumped out a crappy console that had mass appeal, but was a terrible console for the core gamer. But money is the name of the game and if Nintendo thinks they can have another 'Wii' blue ocean event on their hands with Switch, then this console could go south quickly for a lot of people.
So will we see this game on Nintendo Switch? I sure hope so! Hopefully Nintendo's online plan comes together, their user base continues to increase, and the Switch owners cry out to Bungie for Destiny 2! I really want to see that game on the Nintendo Switch. I don't think a lack of hardware power will hold it back. Destiny 2 as a handheld game! Yes, please!
