Well now, I finally got around to beating Resident Evil 5 yesterday. While at my girlfriend's house, we played the last chapter all the way through and finally beat the game. I must say, I LOVE this game. :D
Alright, I also must mention I beat the game later that night when I got home on my own system (was at chapter 6 as well) and it went a lot faster since I knew what to do. I must say, co-op really makes the difference in this game.
I know how some people don't like the game and some do, whether it's because the game didn't change up it's control schemes at all since RE 4, or because it's just more RE 4 in HD, but I must say that I'm really close to calling this my favorite game of this gen again, like RE 4. Now before you throw those sickles at me and pipe bombs, learn that I'm just stating this because I've played this game a majority with my gf and perhaps it's also because we've just had lots of fun moments in the game together playing co-op, but regardless I'm looking forward to go a majority or the whole game solo again.
First off, I will say, that alone, Sheva is annoying. Especially later on. Oh gosh, the fight with the final boss was annoying. As Sheva just wasted all her ammo on him, ignoring the fact that there's only a window of opportunity where he's vulnerable, so she pretty much wasted all her ammo on him, and it had NO effect. :| Lastly, it's also harder to fight the last boss, since Sheva stays to you like your shadow, and it's a LOT easier if you had a pal who could distract him and then shoot the weak point, but no.... Sheva won't do that. :| Also lastly, I found out that the boss battle could end so quickly... Me and my gf did it a weird way, but we beat it too. It seems a quick time event was all you had to do. :|
Now, with that aside, I must say I do love almost everything else about the game. I'm not sure if it's because I've been in a big, BIG RE fan mode as of late. My gf bought Umbrella Chronicles not too late, I cannot wait to buy RE: Darkside Chronicles, and I really hope to play the other RE games like Code Veronica, RE 2 and 3 and even 0 now. (Capcom, if you're reading this, DELIVER!! I swear I'll buy them, right now. Put them on XBLA/PSN/Wii's VC or re-release them with updated graphics, something!!!)
RE 5 to me just is a fun game. It's co-op is a great experience I felt, as you really felt you had to rely on your partner. I mean, yeah RE is all about surviving, being alone, and RE 5 really removes a lot of that feeling, but this co-op stuff works great I found. Mostly because Sheva's AI is sporadic. Helpful one second, in the way the next. Also, it was just enjoyable to play with. They really did make it feel like a co-op effort. However, I must say, split-screen co-op is annoying. (Capcom, can you please update and fix this somehow? :( I know Halo 3 had this problem before when it first came out, later on though it updated it and now my MP games use the full screen of my 65" HDTV instead of being stuck in this wierd 4:3 ratio and using even less screen estate.)
Well RE 5 was a good run, but I must say what's RE 6 going to have? I mean RE 5 closes up everything pretty much, what more can we expect? I can't wait to see, but hope it's not lame either... Where's Ada? Where's Leon?
I dunno but I just hope RE 6 won't change too much too. I like the control setup. I know some wish they could move and shoot, but I really feel that would take out a LOT from the game. You never could in any RE main series, but I do think maybe a dodge button would be helpful. (Didn't RE 3 have this?) Also, if anything I guess moving with a melee weapon would be nice, but make it slow movement too. It's a bit annoying to not be able to just hit the guy with your stun rod or knife because he's like a centimeter out your distance and you have to move up to him by first dropping your weapon, pushing forward, press the weapon to hold out your melee weapon, and swing again (and hope he won't retaliate).
To me though, I love the more focus on action. I know some people miss the Zombies, but I don't think Zombies would be as scary. They are generally slow moving enemies, and these crazed villagers to offer more fear and not to mention they are human and can use weapons too. Zombie bites and scratches are like a kitten compared to these crazed villagers that can use weapons, run, and use cover.
Also, I must admit the cover system should have been better focused, it's a bit annoying that certain walls had to use it, but I also didn't want it to be like Gears either. It'd be nice if you could sift along the wall you're hugging too instead of twisting and turning. Still despite all that's said, the game is very enjoyable. I kind of would like to see how MP plays, but methinks it would be very boring too or frustrating as there are some quirks you can exploit in the game a bit.
Well with that said, sorry for the long blog.... I know I do this a lot... so... just leave a random comment if you feel like it. :P
