@alucardswrath:How many Jeet Kune Do practitioners can act? Also, is that the only reason you enjoy Spike as a character? I don't want poor martial arts on screen, but I don't want bad acting because someone is great at JKD.
@IanNottinghamX: I will definitely say it: it's hard to market comics in 2016. I bet you'd find it hard to find people you know who read comics. Marvel and DC make a lot of money on stuff that is based on their characters and concepts, more than they do their comic books.
I'll stop talking so much "what if" and "maybe" Here are the figures gathered from recent comics sales. As you can see, DC is tops, because they steered the ship back on the right track with Rebirth. Marvel did not have a major shift in their characters, but their Civil War II event has done well for them.
It goes back and forth like this for DC and Marvel. One year, DC's on top, the next, Marvel's on top. Marvel's still in the fight. If Marvel was ever out of the top 5 or 10 in sales, then you could say that somethings' wrong here. Nothing's wrong, though. DC's not "hitting it out of the park" based on those numbers. They're doing really well now, but the numbers will level out as people get used to the new status quo. So what's wrong with Marvel's marketing? If they're doing a bad job, then DC must be doing a slightly less bad job, according to numbers.
You don't see the same respect from Disney as you do Warner because Warner has owned DC for a long time. We're just used to that relationship.
@IanNottinghamX: Their job isn't to "save the comics industry" Their job is to keep the company in the black. You or I are looking at it as consumers who've liked the product. Even if they grew up loving Marvel, the people in that company work to come up with stuff to be profitable. You can promote comics all you want, but only so many people are going to read them. I know no young people who seek out any kind of comics: DC, Marvel, whatever. Movies are easy. To catch up with comics, you'd have to read scores of trades. To catch up with the Marvel cinematic universe, you maybe need 2 days total.
I don't see Disney as the problem with Marvel. Like I said, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was an idea that came around before Disney. They made Sam Jackson Nick Fury before Sam Jackson was ever cast. They got bought because they had a corporate strategy that a big corporation was impressed by.
BTW, DC Comics has been owned by Warner since the 60s, and also Time Warner in the 90s. Why don't you see DC as soulless and corporate? They're all corporate! Marvel is just a younger corporate buyout to me, and it doesn't do that much to the product.
I would guess that you've watched more Marvel or DC recently than you have read.
@IanNottinghamX: I would say that DC Comics recent buzz-worthy event, Rebirth, was in response to what could be seen as a failure- the New 52. You're right; I believe I read that DC's #1 in terms of comics sales. What do the films have to do with the comics? DC's doing comic book movies, too. The comics writers aren't working on the films as well; there are a few who consult and such. If you want to look at comics creators who have a lot of input in the films, Geoff Johns has a lot more responsibility for the DC films now. Someone like Brian Bendis does not have the same responsibility.
I don't know what focus you want on the comic books. The writers are writing stories, just like they always have. They're not being forced to write stories based on the films. They' didn't hire poorer writers because they need more money to go into the films.
These entities are under the same umbrella, but different groups are working at them. I haven't played a good spider-man game in a while, but a new one's coming out, and it looks great! We still have Marvel games coming out. You could probably download 5 Marvel games on your phone right now. I wish there were more games for consoles, but they haven't stopped games from coming out. Maybe their focus is mostly on mobile.
"What was the last awesome Marvel comic related work you've read that stands out? I rest my case."
OBJECTION! The last awesome Marvel-related work? Deadpool. Jessica Jones. Daredevil. Great stuff, and there's more to come. Case closed.
@GUTZandRAGE: Their full emphasis is on the films because a) that's the biggest money-maker and b) the movies have the largest audience. People act like Marvel was this little, humble company that got swallowed up by a heartless corporation. Marvel movies came BEFORE Disney bought them out and because the movies were so popular.
@born_blak85: There's a lot of comic book news. You would have to read that on comic book news websites. The news you're talking about is big enough to be buzzworthy. Comics can't do that all the time.
@IanNottinghamX: What have they "misused" and "devalued"? Also, wasn't this game out before Disney made decisions at Marvel?
Do you read current Marvel Comics? How much say does Disney have about the creative decisions of Marvel comics? Were the quality of the stories any better just before Disney came along? "...and are just using their ips to make movies only." Did you watch the Marvel Netlfix shows? The ABC TV shows? Did you know they're still developing shows on several networks? I really don't know what you're talking about, but it's based in almost no fact. Not liking what they put out, you're free to have your opinion/
