The Bowser if level 5-4 in Super Mario Bros. 1 was, in fact, Bowser's wife! It was with this female koopa that Bowser had the 7 koopalings and Bowser Jr. with.

Little is it known, that Bowser actually DIDN'T kidnap peach in the very first Mario game. Peach snuck out of the Mushroom Kingdom one night, to go talk to her childhood koopa friend, Bowser. BUt when Toadswworth woke up and saw what appeared to be Bowser with peach in the distance, he assumed he was kidnapping her! So he has Mario, the castle's plumber, go rescue her, since he is strangely the strongest warrior in the whole Mushroom Kingdom, to go "rescue" Peach. Mario slaughtered many of Bowser's loyal minions, comrads and brethran, and murdered Bowser's wife in level 5-4! All for the sake of rescuing peach from the "evil" koopas.

After finding out about this massacre, Bowser was depressed and enraged! He figured out from one of his koopa underlings that Mario, the Mushroom Kingdom's plumber, was behind that atrocity, and then it occured to him, that the Mushroom Kingdom was behind the tragedy! Bpwser, letting his sorrow and anger get a hold of him, forcefully grabs Peach, and heads for level 8-4, where he holds Peach captive; Bowser wants The Mushroom Kingdom to pay, so therefore captures Peach, to do god knows what. His children are with him, to avenge mother.

And that's how the war between the Mushroom Kingdom and Koopa Kingdom begun. All of the strife and struggle up to this day is due to Toadsworth's and Mario's ignorance.
