A Hard-Drive and Disc Drive are two very differen't things, .

Actually a HDD or Hard Disk Drive is a form of disc drive as the data is stored on magnetic discs. To answer the OPs question though, you can swap DVD Drives, but only if both are the same drive as there are several different drives used by Microsoft in the 360. There are ways to flash the firmware and fool a drive into thinking it is a different drive but that is probably a little complex for someone that is asking if this is possible on the Gamespot forums.
I've never understood two things: The hate FFVIII gets, and the love FFIX gets. I loved FFVIII. The junctioning system was so cool. The graphics were amazing. The story was insane! Triple Triad was and most likely always will be the best mini game in any Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy IX however was, in my opinion far less engaging than FFVIII. I was really excited about the return to the fantasy roots but it just wasnt done as well as VIII I thought and the card game was garbage. Final Fantasy VI, VIII and X are the three best games in the series IMHO.
