Prototype brings together two genres of gaming with open-world adventure and a superhero storyline

Prototype has been hyped up for the few weeks leading up to its release, and while it's not perfect, it stands out as a very good game. The game puts you in control of Alex Mercer, a man with a mysterious past, which you must figure out through the course of the game, and growing super powers. An infection has taken over New York City, and while many open world games use the setting of NYC, its great to see the city become overrun with zombies and the infection as it grows.

The beginning of the game gives you a taste of Mercer's powers, before it throws you back to the beginning of the infection. As you complete story missions (which you can start any time by going to a marked location on your map) you slowly put together the history of Mercer and the events unfold telling the future. Between missions, there are many things to keep you busy in the city that never sleeps. From varied "events" including 'consume' events (where you use your ability to consume people to consume marked targets) and timed relay'point challenges, to the "Web of Intrigue" (by consuming marked targets around the city and in missions, you gain their memories which link together and form the truth of Mercer's past) you will find yourself with plenty to do, not to mention free roaming the city and using your powers to destroy and consume causing massive damage to your surroundings.

Your powers start off very basic, with the bare necessities but as you complete story missions, you will unlock more upgrades. Using experience points, you can upgrade your powers and acquire new ones. They vary in different categories from a blade arm, to claws, to massive "hulk-like" strength, along with defensive powers and upgrading your consume ability. The destruction of your powers increases with every upgrade and when you unlock the lethal Devastator attacks, all hell breaks loose and leaves you feeling very satisfied with your work.

While Prototype offers no online modes, it has a lot to offer in the single player mode. Even after the story is complete, which you can endure for however long you want, depending on if you take breaks between story missions to complete events and upgrade powers, you can still roam the city and complete any events you missed, along with searching for collectible hint and landmark orbs.

Prototype is a great game in both realms of open world sandbox and superhero and is a must-play for fans of both genres.
