Brings Back Fond Memories...

User Rating: 8.5 | Punch-Out!! WII
In short, this game has all the nostalgic appeal you could ever ask for. You can play it holding the Wii remote just like the old NES controller and it feels just right. The controls are very simple. Left and right punch, duck, dodge left and right, block, and "Star Punch." This is an easy pick-up for any experienced Punch-Out player. Many classic characters from the NES and SNES games return (would've LOVED to see an updated ear-biting "Kid Dynamite") and they fight fairly similar to their past counterparts.

The music is a throwback to the old games too. I really dig the new voices for the game's characters. Disco Kid's woman-esque wincing (sorry, I can be a bit sexist sometimes) is hilarious!

This, as you may expect, is not the deepest game ever. Career Mode can be finished in one play-through, especially if you take advantage of the training mode which allows you to practice your timing against upcoming opponents without fear of picking up a loss. This is good because training and studying the opponent feels more like real boxing. I have mixed feelings about this because part of the appeal of the original was getting pounded the first few times you faced an opponent until you figured out the patterns. Finally defeating a Mr. Sandman or Mike Tyson on NES was HUGE! Here, you're just kinda saying "eh..." after what should be a big win. I guess times have really changed in the gaming world though. No one says you MUST utilize the practice feature.

Overall, I really do like this game and feel it is well worth a purchase. This game is a ton of fun; great for the family. If you game in short bursts because of a busy schedule, this is game will hit that sweet spot of being fun but not too time consuming to get into. I can't say just yet that I'll be playing this 20 years from now like the original Punch-Out but it's definitely got "classic potential."
