The addictive, simple, straight-forward fighting game is back and as fun as it ever was. This is a must-have game.
User Rating: 10 | Punch-Out!! WII
The original Punch-Out is still very much burned into my memory. The left right left dodge block punch sequence I could do in my sleep when I was a kid and I was trying to scramble my way to glory against Mike Tyson. This game is not banking on realism or over the top complicated maneuvers. It sticks to cartoonish but very cool graphics and simple intuitive controls. The end result is a simple game, easy to learn but not too easy to get bored with, easy to learn controls, very fitting stylish grahics with characters that are memorable and funny, and an addictive game that is an instant classic. Others may disagree, but the simple games are ones sometimes built for longevity, and Punch-Out is very much a replayable game.
The only drawback potentially is the VERRRRRY stereotypical portrayal of the fighters. Every stereotype you can think of for that particular fighter's native country is hurled at you with unapologetic old fashioned isolationist perspective. The Irishman is foaming at the mouth, the Indian is on a flying carpet, the Canadian bleeds maple leaves. It's as if the character sketches were made by a seven year old in 1950. But, it doesn't hurt the game because it isn't meant to harm or hurt and isn't particularly offensive, just jarringly unexpected in 2009!
A classic, must-have Wii game. Perfect. Short, but perfect.
