A stroke of genius
The answer with Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is Yes (big Y!). While at its core, it's mostly a Bejeweled variant (which is good), it uses classic RPG gameplay elements such as collecting mana, casting spells, doing damage to your opponent's hit points as you're playing the simple game versus style on the colorful board. These mechanics add a satisfying strategic twist to the gameplay. Luck is still a part of the game, as the random board setting will occasionally favor the enemy, but overall, the right amount of thinking ahead and using magic and/or damage wisely and at the right moment will lead to positive results. It's a game that never becomes frustrating, especially since every battle can be retried as often as desired.
Every match is fought against an opponent with different abilities which, like in a RPG, makes some fights very challenging indeed. As should be in a handheld game, you can play just one quick game and turn the PSP off or hang on for hours on end. The latter alternative will mostly be a result of the other RPG element in the game: You level your character up, buy or even forge items, capture and train enemies, learn theirs spells (all in interesting minigame variations of the core game) and mostly enjoy a well-crafted, albeit conventional, story of a kingdom under attack by undead creatures.
What fascinates about the title is how well the ordinarily disparate elements complement each other. The result is a completely unique gaming experience that on top of being a stroke of creative genius is simply loads of fun to play.
