Addictive cross between Bejewelled and an RPG with lots of levelling up to do between times

I heard this game mentioned in a GameSpot podcast. I thought it was odd that a puzzle game had found its way in among the shout outs for Gears of War and Fallout 3.

I got a PSP 3000 for Christmas but I was a bit disappointed by the standout titles I tried. Lumines was like playing Tetris in a disco; Wipeout was stunning visually but I'm not a big fan of twitch games; Ratchet and Clank looked promising but the mix of camera, aiming and movement is crying out for a second analogue stick. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this unassuming game. I couldn't stop playing it.

I love puzzle games - my favourite is Professor Layton - so the game mechanic in Puzzle Quest is refreshing. Instead of taking on challengers with a series of spells, attacks and defences you play them at Bejewelled. There is plenty of scope for levelling up and the later spells with which you can equip yourself during the puzzles battles soon allow you to trounce earlier bosses. The games are beautifully animated. Although the plot is derivative it has forks. I managed to lose all my companions when I pressed on to the lake of Blood. Not that it did me much good. The final boss is much harder to beat than any other opponent and drinking from the lake is not the answer.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Bejewelled but wants a bit more depth.
