The shooter you'll come back to time and time again.
That's because there are 100 ships that can be unlocked, and each of them play differently, making it rewarding to unlock as many as you can. The gameplay in R-Type Final also makes the daunting task rarely a chore.
For those not familiar with the series, R-Type is a side-scrolling space shooter where the pilot squares off against the Bydo Empire. R-Type Delta, an earlier game for the PSOne, was definitely more difficult than this game, but Final isn't a pushover, just lenient. You can scrape against walls without your ship blowing up, and your force modules absorb shots from small ships.
The ships you unlock have such a great variety of power-ups and abilities, and they all have different designs. Some ships seem organic, as they have fleshy stuff wrapped around themselves. Or some seem like bomber ships, and others are squat looking, making the player think that they were put in as some kind of joke. And then there are a few shape-shifting ships that take the form of a robot when your force module isn't attached to the front of back of the ship.
