One of the best Post-Apocalyptic out there, if it wasn't for some annoying visual quirks.
The game is gorgeous good looking and it somehow invites exploration, its unfortunate that at the same time you notice how buggy and heavy the visuals are, a problem that persists along the whole leght of the game. Still if the graphics as all that there was about this game then i wouldn't be reviewing it.
Graphics/Sound: Both its strong point and its downfall, the visuals in Rage are both fantastically awesome and terribly bad. At the times you may be driving in the wasteland and looking at the sky and think: "Damn, that looks good!", and in others times you might be at a store, buying some ammo and upgrades and notice up-close how bad the textures look, and this inconsistency lasts trough out the whole game. Also coming with these inconsistency come the awful graphics engine, that doesn't seem to be able to hold out whats going on screen, even when you try to lower the resolution, seeing as its the only thing you can change apart from the anti-aliasing. Bugs like popping textures, and constant frame-rate slowdown, are things you have to get used too if you're playing the pc version, its really that awful. But putting aside the graphics, a special mention as to be given to the amazing soundtrack. When you enter ruins this amazing semi scary theme plays and you cant help but feel cautious, but when the action starts the music changes accordingly to accompany the amazing shootouts. And its not just that the musics are ideal to each part but they are great soundtracks that i wouldn't mind having on my mp3, truly something that nowadays games seem to be lacking.
Gameplay: Another thing that Rage truly nails. If Bioshock and Borderlands had a baby, it would be Rage. Bioshocks amazing visuals and incredible weapons variety and Borderlands amazing setting and semi insane foes are all here. Weapons are various, 9 in total and at all times available, a bit like what you have in bioshock, and not only you have 9 ways to fire bullet, but each weapons as up to 4 different kinds of bullets, things like "Fat Mammas" that can literally blow a foes head off, or others like mind control bolts, which let you control momentarily a foe and when the time is right, detonate him for a very satisfying blood splatter that takes out the closest foes, or even "Pop Rockets", rounds that turn you shotgun into something close to a grenade launcher, all of these and more just to name some. And to make the action even more satisfying is the amazing enemy AI. Enemies take cover, retreat when they feel at a disadvantage, and even run at you if they're clinically insane, waving bats and hockey sticks. They truly feel like the foes the game makes them be. Now most of the time will be spent completing quests, that may involve fetching objects, protect targets with a sniper from afar or most of the time, infiltrate an enemy compound, take out most of the enemies inside an the complete some kind of objective. Aside the quests there's also arena matches on Monster Bash or Racing in the various tracks available in the different city's, although neither of these was as well developed as in games like ratchet and clank.
Story: Somehow irrelevant for this game. Yes, the characters are realistically and voice acting is spot on, but the story itself is bad and very straight forward, no plot twists not dramatic moments, you're just the guy who came, destroyed everything in its path one by one and won. It all starts with a good cinematic that explains that the earth was destroyed by a giant meteor and that some people were closed inside these things called arks in order to be reborn in the future world, after the impact. You wake up in a semi destroyed ark being raided by semi insane bandits and the are rescued by a man. From there you start helping out the first town, getting supplies and searching for missing persons, and basically from there you star making your way trough the game, there's no depth too it.
Despite its flaws i still loved to play this game, the world as i said invites exploring, the characters make it believable, and the shootouts are just bloody fun, if you liked borderlands and are hacking for something a bit more full fleshed the try Rage, trust me, you wont regret it.
