Night courses = not fun. Otherwise really great.

It's a truly great racing game, but it has a few noticeable faults: the night-time courses are very annoying -- they are too dark and particularly un-fun when playing multiplayer. Fog and rain I dont mind but pitch-darkness in a driving game is stupid. There are only about 7 night courses, but you have to place high in them in the championships if you want to move on to the next stage. I would have paid 10 dollars more for a version of this game without any night courses. At no time can you pick the time of day in any course, even when not playing the championships. The other fault is the way you load your engine preferences: you have to load them for every race and the interface to do that is annoying with lots of "do you really want to do that?" questions. The graphics are really quite good and arguably surpass the graphics of Project Gotham Racing 2. In single player, the screen is "anti-aliased" so there isn't a jaggy polygon anywhere. Long viewing distances down the roads. In HDTV 480p mode, the game looks genuinely fantastic. On-line multiplayer definately adds to replayability the game. Some of the racing tracks are MUCH more fun than others. I suppose this is true of many arcade racing games but in this game it is especially true. Some of the later more difficult tracks are pointlessly annoying and not well-suited to mulitplayer modes. Some of the earlier tracks that you earn in Championship mode are actually the best tracks in the entire game. I extremely wish you could turn off the weather (rain fog and snow) for multiplayer games.
