A Ratchet & Clank mini adventure, but an incredibly fun one while it lasts.

User Rating: 8 | Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty PS3
With the PS3's online service beginning to take shape to rival XBL, they needed something extra to set it apart, something more then just the fact that it's free. While there are many fantastic titles to download from the service such as Super Stardust HD, fl0w and The last guy, Ratchet & Clank's PSN debut stands out above the crowd, this is because the game has the visuals, sound and budget of a full retail game, rivaling it's predecessor Tools of Destruction.

Carrying on right from where TOD left off, Quest for Booty starts with Ratchet in search for Clank who has been taken by the mysterious zoni, and a dead pirate known as Captain Darkwater may have clue to finding him, but he won't give it up without a fight, and neither will his cut-throat undead pirates.

This game like the others in the series is essentially a platformer but one in which Ratchet gets access to a large variety of unique sci-fi weapons to dispatch his enemies with. Every weapon Ratchet has can be upgraded with bolts in an RPG like fashion increasing stats such as power and range. Giving the game quite a few elements of genres to tinker around with but they work together remarkably well.

New to this title though is Ratchet's added wrench ability, now using this melee weapon he can pick things up in the end of it, either glowing coals to throw and destroy gates / barriers or these strange green blob creatures that glow in the dark to help light Ratchets way. And their bulging eyes while wedged in the wrench are hilarious.

Speaking of which this game is just plain funny, if you liked the humour in TOD, then this pretty much follows suit with once again, brilliant voice acting from all the cast, even the smaller roles such as the foreman who mentions "union regulations" to avoid doing anything at any point. The music like the voice acting is perfect, really laying down the atmosphere for any situation, especially when with the undead pirates, almost pirates of the caribbean like.

Combat aside there are a few puzzles here and there like lining up shadows, figuring out pirate riddles as well as less mind taxing quests such as finding objects and winding things up with your wrench.

Visually, Quest for Booty is stunning for a download game, or even a retail game. The lighting is exquisite with some brilliant mirror surfaces. The game is also amazingly colourful, and the character animations are really lively and in most cases bloody funny as you would expect in line with the rest of the game. These graphics come at a price though, the size of the title is over 3000mb, however it is also now available on blu-ray disc at the same reasonably cheap price should you want to keep the game and free up hdd space like i did.

The only real problem is pretty much summed up on the box "A Ratchet & Clank mini adventure". The game is short, i mean it took me 2 and a half hours to finish with all weapon upgrades and extras, but despite this it was fun and worth every penny, a great bridge to the next game in the series. If you are a fan, then you already have it, if not, get Tools of Destruction then this, because they are worth every penny.
