Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando improves upon it's predecessor, and manages to be the best game in the series.

User Rating: 8.5 | Ratchet & Clank 2: Locked and Loaded PS2
The original Ratchet & Clank was a superb platformer, that breathed new life into the genre by including an arsenal of fun, bizarre weapons at your disposle, as well as including a humorous storyline with loveable characters.

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando proves to be a terrific sequel, as it improves all of the aspects of the original while still keeping everything that made the first one so great. At times this can be a bit of a problem, as things start to feel a little too familiar, but usually it serves as great appeal to new and old fans alike.

The newest aspect in R&C:GC would be the upgradeable weapons. All of the awesome weapons you obtain now come with an experience bar; the more you use said weapon, the higher the experience goes. Once it reaches the top, it will transform into a better version of the original. Sometimes this means shooting multiple rockets instead of one, sometimes this means turning your mini-bombs into mini-nukes, but all of the time it is just plain fun to go through the game getting bigger and better weapons.

Your health bar also has experience attached to it, and whereas in the original R&C where I ended the game with 5 hitpoints, I had FAR over 20 by the time this one was over! These RPG-esque elements serve as a great new addition to the already fantastic gameplay.

Much of the graphics in this Ratchet & Clank sequel appear familiar to the original game, as does the sound. This isn't quite a bad thing though, as that game looked and sounded great. However, it does give 'Going Commando' a bit of an expansion pack feel as opposed to an all new game. The storyline continues to be cute and charming, with that now classic humour of the series. Some of the cutscenes had me laughing out loud, and the animation in all of the characters expressions is top notch. Again, the scenario of the story hasn't changed much from the first game, but this isn't too much of a problem.

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando is a great sequel as it keeps the feel of the original while adding a lot of cool new features. It suffers, though, on how much it RELIES on the original, and the feeling of deja vu you may experience playing through the game. This still leaves R&C:GC highly reccomendable, and my personal favourite entry in the series.
