Ratchet and Clank, but smaller? How can this work?
Story: Ratchet and Clank have just finished their last mission and are looking for a relaxing vacation to get away from the hero stuff. Surprisingly, a little girl named Luna wants to write a report on the life of a hero and chooses Ratchet. As we all know, she gets captured and Ratchet and Clank have to return to playing the heroes again following the trail left by the Technomites. Simple with plenty of humor that is perfect mixed in with the somewhat serious moments. 9/10
Graphics: The PSP which compared directly to the PS2 is more powerful but Sony capped the CPU at 266Mhz. Anyways no more technical jargon. The graphics are great. The in game graphics are bright and colorful. The cutscenes seem like movies but I'm not quite sure on that. Nicely designed characters with a cartoon look to them. Nothing else to comment, a little bit of slowdown sometimes when there's a lot of bolts flying towards you. 9/10
Sound: Sound, isn't really important to me but a bad sounding game could really potentially ruin it. Thank god for this game. Voice acting is top notch with everyone, sounding just right. The Luna voice at the beginning was kind of funny, yeah. The sound effects for the guns just didn't sound right, but I can't complain about it. 8/10
Gameplay: Think Ratchet and Clank in portable form. All the original moves are amazingly reformatted to work for the PSP. The camera is now controlled by the L and R triggers. The camera can be a little weird when you're strafing and moving it around yourself. The guns come back with the more gadgets than I thought you could put on the PSP with crazy effects. My personal favorite is the Shock Rocket. Your health appears in the middle of the screen and shows how much of your bar you have left with a numerical representation. The more enemies you defeat a little bar below your heatlh bar will increase until it fills up and you get more health. When you use weapons, their own bar will increase and your weapon will level up and become more powerful. The mission objectives you have are varied, Ratchet is the shooter levels, Clank is the mini-game, rail shooter, robot commanding guy. After you defeat a boss character you usually get an armor piece to add to your collection. Their are many different armor pieces and you can customize Ratchet to your liking. Gadgets also return with multiple fun uses. The Polarizer will reverse the pull of a magnet you aim it at. When you're bored and feel like playing some mini-games Dayni Moon has robot battles and puzzles you can play with Clank. While the Medical Hopsital place has a race track you can race with Ratchet. One little complaint I have with the gun system is the mod system, the mods you can buy "help" you improve your gun but the effect isn't really seen. 9/10
Value: The replay value in this game is great. When you first beat the game, you can start the game over with your previous weapons and armor. All the armor pieces aren't collectible on your first play around. You have to play Challenge mode to collect all of the watches. It's always fun to come back and play the game over again. It's just plain fun. 10/10
Rent It or Buy It: If you're looking for a good solid action game on the PSP, rent it. If you're a Ratchet and Clank game buy it, right now, go, I'll be waiting for you to thank me.
