WORTH PLAYING
User Rating: 10 | Ratchet & Clank (Platinum) PS2
Insomniac definately has some skill, I must give them that. The trilogy of Spyro games on the original Playstation made my purchase worth while all by themselves. So naturally when I found myself to be the owner of a Playstation 2, the first game I played was their new masterpiece, Ratchet and Clank. I've loved platformers for a while, but recently I haven't had many to play. All I've really had are Sonic Mega Collection (brought back some nostalgic memories), Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge (which brings new meaning to boredom) and Super Mario Sunshine, which while excellent, wasn't able to wet my platforming appetite. Ratchet and Clank does that. You are Ratchet, an alien that is some kind of a cross between a tabby cat and a raccoon, who just wants to get out and explore the galaxy, when a robot named Clank lands on his home planet. Clank fixes our hero's ship, and soon the two are off, with some troops chasing after Clank on their tail. First off, you have to love Clank. His monotonus voice and literal interpretations of everything are great (his "Am I cool?" quote was my favorite). The villain of the story, Supreme Executive Chairman Drek, also has some great cutscene moments. But the best part of the game is the weapons. I loved choosing which way I was going to destroy my foes. Burn them with the Pyrocitor? Turn them into chickens with the Morph Ray? Swarm them with tiny robots with the Glove of Doom?
And like the Spyro games, there is a skateboarding mini-game (now hover-boarding) that I love. I can only hope for the day when Insomniac puts multi-player skateboarding into one of their games.
There are some glitches in the game. The difficutly changes a lot from easy to hard, and the cutscenes that begin your game whenever you load it up and travel to a different planet are too long and annoying. But these flaws can be forgiven when you consider the many things that the game does right.
