Considering that I'm totally lost in GameSpot's new design... "Remember Me" is a fitting game to review on this site at this time.
It took me a while to understand how to play this game and it took me a while to finish this game (because it didn't hook me). It wasn't until well over half way through that I realized that the combos were themselves a mini game (of remembering, ha!) and needed to be changed according to the situation your main character "Nilin(m)" found herself in. It is my fault that it took that long to understand the game, or did the designer/developers not do a good enough job to set it up for me? Could be both... although I'll probably take more the blame.
In any case, I'm impressed with the game. While the story was told in very disjointed (on purpose?) ways and the game-play was annoying sometimes, the atmosphere, concept and overall delivery of the experience was well done. Kudos to the developers/designers on make Neo-Paris feel like a real, modern urban dystopia that has basically intermixed computers, humans, and the Internet. The game play itself makes creating combos an important part of the game. But, I don't feel it's executed very well. Again, my fault? Maybe it's the completely "proprietary" names given to the "powers" the charater has. I don't know, but I do feel there's something unique in what was given the player. It's just a matter if it can be understood.
The memory remixes are pretty cool and give you a minor (fake) sense that you're developing the story on the fly. I know that some reviewers wanted to see more of this.. but I think the amount given to you in the game is enough.
Back to the story. "Events" happen "off screen" that are vital to the story, but somehow you don't get to see it? Something was flooded, then drained? You get to experience the aftermath, but there's no buy-in into the situation. If you're not listening carefully to the conversation between the Nilim and her talking-head voice, you'll just think it was another map. Anyway,
This is a good, solid game, no doubt, and fans of hack/slash/button-mashers should check out this game. Pay attention that combos should be (remixed, ha!) through out the game to work with new situations/enemies.
