The greatest game ever? ... Probably.
One major difference from previous Resident Evil games is the camera system. Which has had a total overhaul, and is absolutely miles better for it. Your viewpoint is now just looking over Leon's shoulder. A quick press and holding of the right shoulder button brings Leon into aiming mode, ready for action with the A button. Because of this camera change, the action is alot more claustrophopic, meaning enemies are more in your face. Thanks to the outstanding graphics, probably THE best on the current consoles, when the action does get up close and personal, then there's no loss in texture quality or sheen.
They've also done away with the loading doors/screens, and I think it's about time really. I've had this game since day of release, and have gone through it 4 times... in a row. First time round, it's pure Resident Evil - anticipating terror round every corner and through every door. Second or third time it's just fun to play in its purest form, as games should be. The upgrading of weapons and being able to buy new and beefier substitutes is a welcome new addition. Adding more strategy to the game. Making you think which weapon would be best for which enemy. Oh yeah, the enemies - in my book they are easily the best looking, most disturbing gaggle of freaks you're going to see in any game.
The music is sheer brilliance in creating such great mood and atomosphere. But anyway, this game ranks up there, if not at the number 1 spot, as one of the greatest games I have ever had the honour of playing.
