Resident Evil 4 deserves a 8.0 or an 8.5. So why a 6.5? If you are considering acquiring it for the pc, here's wh
the bargain bin. I did not think much of it at the time, as a was able to acquire some beautiful
gems in the bin of bargains, previously. Resident Evil 4 is one of those gems. One of those gems that
looks like it just needs to be polished. I found out it isn't the diamond in the rough...
It's not even the ruff!
I was a little bit let down by Resident Evil 4.
The storyline in Resident Evil 4 is good. I won't argue with that. Some of the monstrosities you will face
are truly amazing and the level of care with the design is apparent.
The voice acting weakens the revealing of the plot. Leon Kennedy.
What an idiot. I'm sorry, but I had to mention this.
How difficult is it to figure out that somebody has planted something inside of you? Apparently, it's quantum mechanics. One would think that the visions coupled with the the parasitic zombies and perhaps Lord Saddler ACTUALLY STATING IT TO LEON would be enough to make him figure it out. But alas, poor Leon seems so preoccupied with his bad voice-overs that this already stated fact eludes him for much of the game.
The voice acting done by the bosses and other characters is done very well, if only Ashley and Leon, two
of the main characters would follow this example.
The game's difficulty was truly planned to match Leon's IQ. I say this because some of the 'puzzles' are truly hilarious. It's truly an insult to Resident Evil fans. For instance, in one puzzle you have to mix tiles to get
some kind of image. This particular image(An insignia) is also present in 80% of the other puzzles. I actually thought this puzzle would be hard. Oh no, the puzzle isn't even mixed up thoroughly! All you have to do is rotate
some tiles to get the Insignia! It's almost as if someone else had spent two hours figuring out the puzzle and left the final 1% to the player to complete. If that wasn't bad enough if or when you arrive at a locked door, chances are you've already picked up its key along the way AND THE GAME GOES TO THE KEY/ITEM SCREEN AUTOMATICALLY, with the key already in the selection window 90% of the time!
Perhaps I'm being too hard. After all, it takes a GREAT level of skill to select a key you already have and use it!
Now, before I overreact, let's move on to the cutscenes. The cutscenes are good and you'll be endlessly entertained by Leon's
bad voice-acting.
But what's this!? Press 5 + 6? WTF!?
I'm sorry, there isn't a more accurate term to describe
it. How could they just port a game from the consoles without even changing the damn controls
displayed in the cut-scenes! How the hell am I supposed to know what button (1) or (5) is?
The only real puzzle in Resident Evil 4 is figuring out the controls! Really, would it kill for a
a '(5) Left Shift by default' and a '(6) Right Shift by default'!
The game play. The game play is at least fun and bursting zombie heads just never gets old.
Or does it? Resident evil 4 boasts many locations, many bosses, many different enemies but gets
repetitive pretty soon and once I thought I was being suffocated by seeing the same enemies and
having to kill them in the same manner once again. It's like some bad dream where you're just walking
for hours and all you desire is to wake up but it drags on forever.
The amount of weapons in RE4 is also impressive and the Merchant is a good addition to the series,
although they should tie him in with the plot somehow, because even the g-man would find this guy random.
The biggest vexation of all was the frequent crashes I experienced. I had to replay several large sections because
of game crashes and that is unacceptable. I think it is time to get a better saving alternative or make it more frequent. The game is absolutely unforgivable in that sense, if the game crashes you have no more continues
and you will have to execute the game again and start from your previous save point. In the early portions
of the game the saving points are well-placed and frequent. If your game crashes at the senior chapters good luck, because you'll have to replay the last 20 minutes.
That brings me to the question of only a few save points? I played Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3.
I know the typewriter is legendary. I love it too, but I'm willing to sacrifice it for a pda with an infinte number of saves.
Resident Evil 4 demoed great potential. With a good plot and great series backing it Capcom should have
been able to capitalize. The truth is they probably did. The truth is Resident Evil 4 is great on the consoles, but due to Capcom's inconsiderate attitude towards the pc platform how can I not let the games
shortcomings and Capcom's attitude be reflected in my score of Resident Evil 4 for the pc?
We all love you Capcom, as do I. So hear me now and learn from this experience: I don't like giving Resident Evil 4 pc a mediocre rating, but frankly, it deserves nothing more. We know this isn't you Capcom...
Don't let it happen again.
