The controls are a bit awkward at first and are actually the reason I don't think this is the perfect horror game. Other that one minor flaw though, the game really shines. Graphically it is impressive; it really extends the PS2 to its limits. The plot seems a bit contrived at times but it still kept me moving along. What makes this game the gem it is, is the combat (for lack of a better word). When you pop a zombie in the shoulder with your 9mm he reels back just like a real human would. The zombies act surprsingly realistic when they are shot which truly adds to the experience. Once the controls have been mastered the game really becomes second nature. You find yourself cycling between your various upgraded handguns and shotguns with ease as you send scores of zombies back to their graves. The upgrades to the weapons are cool and become progressively more powerful as you make your way through the game. Towards the end you possess enough weaponry to support a small militia and the cool part is you use every bit of it. Throughout the whole game I just kept thinking to myself that this game is just absolutlely sick. I loved every second of it and I actually did something I rarely do: played it for a second time all the way through. Once you beat the game you are given the option to keep all of your weapons which I of course did. As you progress through the levels you can blast the hell out of all the foes that gave you trouble the first time through with ease; it's really satisfying (that sounds kind of evil but you get the point.) Overall I would have to say that this is definitely one of my favorite games and I would encourage anybody who has some spare time to pick it up and start blasting away.
