Horror? nah... Fun? Hell yeah!

Ok, so I got this game called Resident Evil 4. I looked on the front, and what I saw, I liked. First impressions are important. On the back, it's got all this mumbo-jumbo about "greatest survival horror game of all time" or whatnot. I've heard good things about this game and how creepy it it is. So I get it expecting to be thoroughly entertained and scared out of my trousers. But I only get the former. But you know what? This is a game, not a horror flick, so that's good enough.

Often, Resi4 tries to be a horror flick. It does a pretty good job. There were times when I was like "OMFG! What the hell is that thing?!" But that's about it in the horror department. The focus is on using a variety of weapons from pistols to laser cannons to destroy a variety of... beings. Grotesque beings. Speaking of laser cannons, I bet a lot of you are wondering what the pros and cons of this and the GC version. The truth is, I have no idea beyond facts. All I have is a PS2 and a GBA. But I can tell you, for a fact, this is probably better just for the "Separate Ways" side quest (yes, I'm an RPG freak). I can't imagine having this taken out, no matter the minor graphical and loading improvements. Not to mention the laser cannon and other less significant, but still cool, additions. If you're worried the game will sink into a "things appear and get shot and appear again and get shot again" cycle of endless despair, fear not. This game has plenty of new environments, puzzles, baddies, weapons and such to shake things up after an hour or two. And on a final gameplay note, this game is hard. What, you thought escaping from a Spanish pseudo-zombie land was easy? But once you get good, it's alright. Pseudo-zombies. Why did I use that term? You shall see in the game...

Graphics? Crisp. Gritty. Gory. Dark (no, not the bad kind of dark, the good kind of dark). Excellent. Sound. Blood-curdling, Still Crisp. Well- voice acted. Music. Very creepy. Cool. But overall, not exceptionally noteworthy.

Value? This was a tough choice. On the one hand, it's got loads of unlockables, like the aforementioned "Separate Ways". But after that, it's just, rebeat the game, but it's tougher now. Yay. So, that's a 9/10. Sorry.

In the end, no one can accurately describe how good this game is or how- enjoyable?- killing off peasants and other Spanish-speaking entities is. You know how it is. People are like, “Oh this game is good. You should get it.” And you’re like, “Um , alright.” Then you go home and you realize all the praise had been way too understated, and that, if it’s roughly along the premise of Resi4, that it’s actually a little corner of Hell, as played in Heaven, and that you use the word “like” way too much. That’s Resi4. I’ve never played any other Resident Evil games, but this has put a good first impression of the series on me. And first impressions are important.
