Beauty, great voice acting, and a cool story doesn't mask this game's problems.
The game looks fantastic. The characters, settings, and especially the monster designs are just gorgeous. The colors work very well, and enemies are gruesome and unique. The backgrounds stand out as well. The sounds and voice acting are top notch, a little hokey at times, but I love that about the series. The story is insane. It's crazy to think how at one time in 1997, it was just one lowly little city that was infected, and now the characters are all over the world. It's also great to see Sherry Birkin back, and running into Leon, and Leon running into Chris finally. All these classic characters interacting is great. But sadly, the pros end there. The cons greatly outweigh the pros.
The camera: It bothered me from the first time I gained control of a character. I couldn't zoom out? Really? Being on a controller made it twice as annoying, as I am used to a mouse and keyboard.
The controls: Control issues have always been flaky in the RE series. It works perfect on a mouse and keyboard when I played RE5, so that is what I was used too. Even the controls were decent on a controller for RE4, but RE6 is just an annoying learning curve.
QTEs: These are absolutely the worse, and kill the flow of any game. I like to enjoy RE cut scenes, I want to put the controller down without worry that I am going to die because I didn't hit X+O during a cut scene. These QTEs are EVERYWHERE. You can't just turn a crank, you have to tap BOX repeatedly to turn that crank, you can't just climb a rope, you have to alternate L1 and R1 to climb that rope. These QTEs just need to go. They really ruin the game, and easily costed this game at least 1 full point if not 1.5 points.
Damage Scale: Is it broken? You seem to take ridiculous amounts of damage from normal enemies in the beginning of the game. This is more of a pet peeve though. Just like how scarce ammo is in the beginning of the game.
Lack of weapons: A handgun, a shotgun, an assault and sniper rifle, and a magnum (I've only gone through Leon's scenario). If I look back at Leon's scenario in RE2 we have a handgun (upgraded handgun), a shotgun (upgraded shotgun), a magnum (upgraded magnum), a flame thrower, and a sub machine gun. Anyone else see a problem here? Again this is more of a pet peeve.
Trial and Error: I am running along and WHAM! A car mows me down and kills me instantly. Almost 0 time to react. So I have to die once in order to learn to take that particular area slowly? That is unacceptable. Unless you knew prior about this particular part, you are dead 100%. That's not fun.
Where is the mystery: The fun things about RE1, RE2, RE3, and RE:CV was that it was way more open world. I mean eventually, certain areas are locked down and you can't go back, but for the most part, especially in RE1, you can go back to the mansion until last 80% of the game. That's fantastic! If you missed precious ammo, or the magnum, you had time to go back and get it! You had to figure things out!
This game maps out everything for you, and if you go through a door, chances are, you can't go back through it. But it tells you exactly where to go and what to do. Need to find a key in RE1? Have fun searching different floors and and different rooms. Need to find a key in RE6? Don't have any fun running 25 meters to the little icon on your screen. Puzzles? Classic RE games were full of crazy WTF puzzles. Those days are long gone my friend.
These things gave the series its charm. It's sad to see it die.
I could go on with other problems, but what is the point. The game is pseudo-fun for what it is, that's why I scored it the way I did, but the charm is gone. It's been gone since RE4, but that game worked because it was a new formula. This new formula feels tired and old already. Time to revive the classic formula.
Capcom, go back and look at what made Code Veronica the best game in the series, and do it again! I want Code Veronica 2! Make it happen Capcom. Resident Evil 6 was a good try but I know you can do better!
UPDATE 11/12/12: Dropped it from a 6.5 to 6.0 after playing through Leon's and Chris' story. The game is very annoying, and predictable in a bad way. Not even bothering with Sherry's and Ada's story, it is going back to Gamefly.
