There is something wrong with the Resident Evil franchise these days and that problem come from the developer decision to add more and more action to the survival horror game. The result is not pretty, the result is this game. I hope Capcom could learn something from it.
Story (6/10)
+ multiple campaign that intersect each other is a great idea.
+ each campaign shed more light to the core mystery nicely.
+ nice come back by the series veterans
- script is still too 'Japan', very corny and cliche
- while the way they uncovered the mystery is quite nice, the mystery itself is not so great
- baffling and illogical decision by numerous characters made the story feel so weird
Gameplay (6.5/10)
+ people in Resident Evil universe can finally aim and reload while walking!? that is awesome!
+ the new aim system that follow the camera movement is also nice
+ no more dedicated run button, you can easily run (or jog) using the analog stick, but if you want to move even faster, use the sprint button
+ the slow, standard zombie is back! well, at least at the first chapter on Leon's campaign
+ tons of enemy variety with different way to defeat add more challenge to the game.
+ the survival part is still on the game, you won't find too many supply even on normal difficulty.
+ offline co-op, although the not full screen split screen is still annoying
+ you don't need to babysit the AI anymore if you decide to play alone. They can take care of themselves and they won't need any of your supplies, but they won't give too much help on combat.
+ melee combat is pretty satisfying
- annoying close camera, especially on cramped area like China or any corridor.
- maneuvering your character in tight space can be very frustrating, especially when they can't stop running like idiot (now i hope Capcom take the sprint button and replace it with the original run button)
- some movements require too much buttons. Why simple movement like taking a cover or crouching or prone or sliding require so much effort?
- the focus of the game is action, especially with enemies that able to control guns and shoot you but the lack of ammo can be very frustrating
- the QTE is more annoying than ever
- the cinematic setpieces done extremely poor. What makes the setpiece on action games like Uncharted, Tomb Raider, or Dead Space so awesome is because the character move so fluid and the camera work perfectly so you know when is the right time to jump or slide over obstacles. RE 6 failed on every way possible in making this setpieces. The character move like a tank and the camera frantically change its position making it very frustrating.
- often, the in-game video (like video to show which door is open when you pull a lever) doesn't stop the enemy so there are a good chance that you will lose a chunk of your health or get knock out when you get back to your character.
- weird stuff like the lead character (Chris, Leon, and Jake) must stand at the left side of the door or ledge while the support character on the right side because the game only have one type of video with that combination.
- can human really move backward while prone while shooting by only using their legs? I try it and it nearly impossible without using my elbow
Graphic (7/10)
+ the environment is quite detailed
+ nice lightning effect
+ character design is nice although i still don't understand the importance of some female characters in this game to show her cleavage.
+ nice pre-rendered cutscenes
+ pretty stable framerate, even on split screen mode
+ nice particle effect
- pop up textures, sometimes there is no texture at all.
- same animation for every characters. Why would a bulky soldier like Chris have the same running animation with the lean and slim hired gun like Ada?
- useless and weird animation like the dual breach where the character stand before the door, staring so seriously, nodding, and then walk so aggressively to an empty room without holding any weapon. What the hell is the purpose of that animation?
- the map get separate with too many loading screen and useless cutscenes. There are one section of the game where a cutscene only separated with a 10 seconds of gameplay (that consist of just walking) before another cutscene pop up.
Sound (7/10)
+ nice performance by the voice actors, especially Troy Baker as Jake.
+ pretty nice scores
Verdict (6.5/10)
Resident Evil 6 is not really a bad game, it have good parts but the main problem is the game's identity. Capcom put so many element of action game into a game that basically Resident Evil 4. The result is a messy and frustrating game. I don't know what made Capcom think they need to fight against other action shooter in the market through their Resident Evil franchise but i hope they realize soon that it doesn't fit and it will always result in an average game.
