Did not achieve what it set out to do but is still a good game nonetheless!!!

User Rating: 8 | BioHazard Outbreak (PlayStation 2 the Best) PS2
This is my long awaited review of Outbreak. I've got three copies of this game due to the fact that I happen to have the urge to play it when I'm at three different places in my life lol (Don't know how that applies to this review but oh well moving along). So anyway, I personally think this game is pretty good. Capcom's plan was to make this a online game but since many PS2 owners did not have online capability on their machines when the game was released, this was a bad move. At the same time, online play wasn't smooth either. There was a lack of communication system among players and more often than not professionals found themselves teaming up with amateurs who mess up their scores. So I guess as an online game, Outbreak was a failure. But, as a single player game it is just like any of the older Resident Evil games and provides a good survivor horror experience.

Gameplay:
Most people that are put off by this game find that the problem lies here. Controls are stiff making maneuvering out of tight situations very frustrating (and believe me this game has plenty of tight situations). While such a problem can be solved by using the analogue stick to control the character, there is another problem with camera angles. At times, camera angles are just pure pain in the a**. Movement is impaired by this as the change in camera angles can make you end up running like a headless chicken. For instance, moving forward one moment and then running backwards the next due to the change in angles. This is really frustrating especially when you are surrounded and need to flee quickly. This problem stands out right from the beginning so it can make you hate this game very quickly.

But if you could overlook it you'll see that this game isn't that bad at all. The game is split into five scenarios. Each taking place at different locations all around Racoon City. Although the scenarios don't have much linkages ie. there isn't a story going around, you could piece it up together to see the bigger picture of what's exactly happening. The game gives you 8 characters to choose from at the outset, each with different specialties. For example, Alyssa is a news reporter who's good at unlocking stuff, Cindy is a waitress who's got a healing pack that can hold extra herbs and let her heal teammates for more hit points and David is a plumber who's got a tool pack which enables him to make all kinds of weapons from any items you find in the game. Despite this very short summary of the characters, you'll find that there is a certain level of depth to each character that requires different strategies when you use them. I am very pleased with Capcom here because they didn't just make any character to pass the game off with. They actually did put in some effort to make these characters.

The main idea was to have a online co-op and have these characters working together. But like I've said since that didn't work, let me give you a low down on offline mode. Offline mode, this is a single player game. So basically you pick one character to start a scenario with and the game's AI would pick another 2 to go with you. The AI controlled characters do basic things well such as saving you and holding inventory items but most of the time you'll find them to be a nuisance as they run around aimlessly and get into your way. However, some scenarios have objectives that are two fold and you would see one of your AI partners complete one of the objectives for you which can be quite nice.

Other than all that I've pointed out, there are the monsters, items, guns, puzzles (can be quite challenging which is good). This is Resident Evil alright. Moving along...

Graphic:
For me, this is where the game excels at. Considering that the game was released sometime in 2003/2004, it's already one of the best looking ones around. Cut scenes are nicely made, detailed and crisp. Characters just look good. You could see their facial expressions and the way they walk and draw a gun just flows smoothly. On one of the scenarios there's a cold portion and you see smoke coming out of their mouths as though their breathing which is very realistic. A very good looking game overall.

Sound:
Not only does it look good it sounds great as well. High quality music tracks, monster noises as well as gun fire and character voices are just top notch. You'll never find any flaw in the audio.

Extras:
Tons of unlockables. More character costumes, higher modes as well as musical scores and art are all here. But really, this game takes awhile to get sick of so don't worry too much here.

Overall:
I've mention all there is. Personally, I think this isn't a bad game. Granted Capcom wanted this to be a online co-op and although it didn't fit that description it still turned out well as a single player one. One downside is the controls which makes the game harder than it looks. In conclusion, I'd recommend this game to anybody who's a fan of Resident Evil and survivor horror.
