The original and the best

User Rating: 9.1 | Resident Evil (Value) PS
Resident Evil was the first playstation game I ever played and I’ll always look back on it with fond memories. Although the game mechanics and concepts would remain the same throughout the rest of the series what sets the original apart from its sequels are the hilarious (if not outright campy) FMVs & voiceovers. This was a game whose FMV sequences were on par with C&C: Red Alert and the movie Army of Darkness, the intro alone deserves a Golden Raspberry. Perhaps equally as funny is the script, I think I lost count of the number of lines containing sexual innuendo not to mention the horrible voice acting (only after playing MGS a few months later did I realize how bad it was). In spite of all this though RE is still a classic survivor horror game, it was the first game I had ever seen on a console with true 3D graphics and a realistic environment, the first game to produce such a claustrophobic and heart pumping atmosphere I would go to bed at 3AM shivering and it provided the right mix of anticipation, horror, action and problem solving with a creepy soundtrack to match.

Despite later sequels providing more immersive pre-rendered FMVs and surpassing it technically and in gameplay the original Resident Evil deserves a spot near (if not at) the top of my playstation list.
