The Start of an already Excellent Series!!! ( some cheats spoilers)

User Rating: 8.6 | Resident Evil (Value) PS
Concept: Before I begin with the story, this is the very first Resident Evil release in North America. Capcom or any other company didn't really have the key ideas to an excellent survival horror game. Resident Evil was a gamble because Capcom didn't know how gamers would respond to a survival horror game. A lot was on the line during the process of this game but thanks to the Playstations 3-d graphics processor, Resident Evil did indeed become a hit providing good graphics, a well written story, and basically becoming the best survival horror game out at it's time of it's 1996 release. Resident Evil was also released on the Sega Saturn in 1997. Resident Evil would later be rereleased as Resident Evil Director's Cut for Playstation in 1997 and would have more secrets and game modes than the original. To people who aren't familiar with the Resident Evil story, here is the breakdown. Resident Evil is about a special police force known as S.T.A.R.S { special tactics and rescue service } that is sent up to the Arklay Mountains in Racoon City. The Bravo team was sent up first to invesigate the Mt. because locals reported seeing strange monsters and a hiker was found dead in a river that starts up at the Mt. Bravo team then dissapeared when they were sent up into the Mt. So the Alpha team was sent up there to rescue them but were attacked by crazed dogs and ran into a Mansion to escape them and because there helicopter pilot abandoned them. So from there the adventure begins.

Gameplay: Once again I am a big Resident Evil fan but I always picture myself as a new gamer to make my reviews fair. When it is put that way, Resident Evil's gameplay is good but it could have been better. Once again your character controls more like a tank than an actual person. Due to the fact that this game is old, there is no 180 degree turn {I ment to review this game a long time ago}. Other than that every other thing about the gameplay is okay with me. You have your basic action button, a button to target monsters approaching you and so on. The learnig curve to figure out all the controls should take about 5-10 minutes if your good, and 10-15 minutes for your average gamer to get used to.

Graphics: This is the Playstation so don't expect any Metal Gear Solid 2 or Halo type graphics. So since it's the Playstation, the graphics aren't bad at all. Due to Playstations limited graphic abilities, this is good graphics on a system like this. The zombies and other monsters look fairly scary and the backgrounds have a fair amount of detail. The character models are impressive as well and Capcom did a good job with this game graphically. The backgrounds aren't in 3-d so the characters and everything they interact with sticks out of the background. Everything still blends in with the backgrounds though and the graphics of the entire game is nicely done.

Sound: Once again the usual Resident Evil sounds. For those new comers, the music helps bring this game to life. For a first try, Capcom makes it seem like thay have done this before. The music being played is fairly creepy and fits well into a survival horror game like this. As for the monsters, the zombies and other monsters have fairly scary sounds that they make. The weapons don't sound fake and the zombies don't sound cheap like out of a B movie. Sadly the same can't be said for the voice acting. The games dialogue is very cheesy and simply horrible. It litteraly sounds like the characters are reading from a script when I thought they were supposed to make the voice acting sound as real as possible. Not only that, but also the people reading the script make themselves sound reading illitarete like they don't know how to read and are mentally challenged. Other than that horrible voice acting, the games sound is decent enough for you to not turn the volume down.

Replay Value: This game has decent replay value. There are 2 weapons to unlock and if you are playing original, you'll also have to unlock the costumes that are available for each character. On top of that, if your a person that usually beats every mode to a game, you have 3 modes to beat here. If you have the Saturn vresion of this game, you are treated to a hidden battle mode that you can unlock for good replay value. This game also has multiple endings as well so you'll be playing this game for a while.

Entertainment: This game is okay in this department. The action picks up then goes down and then picks up again and then goes down and so on and so forth. The only reason the action is like that though is because there are many puzzles and when it comes time to solving most of them, the action gets boring or there is no action at all.

Overall: Capcom leaves with a trophy for such an excellent first try. The sound is a good quality of this game despite the horrid voice acting and so is the replay value. As a matter of fact the replay value is one of the strong points of this game. The graphics are also well done. If you like survival horror games or some challenging puzzles every now and then, this game should be a good match for you. If you don't like puzzle at all and your not neccassarily a big fan of survival horror, then you probably shouldn't have read this far into the review let alone buy this game. Buy it as soon as you can but there is no need for rush because after all it's a Playstation game. This is a last generation game and chances are there will always be a pre-owned copy at your local video game store.
